Lubrication Solutions for the Sugar Industry
The sugar mill industry, like many other heavy industries, faces unique lubrication challenges. This is due to the very demanding operating conditions of its machinery. Sugar production involves multiple steps with large equipment. There is exposure to moisture and contaminants to manage along with continuous operation. This all combines to put enormous stress on lubricants and machinery.
Typical challenges in the Sugar Industry
High Moisture and Contamination
Sugar mills operate in humid environments exposed to water, sugarcane juice, dirt, bagasse (the fibrous residue of sugarcane), and other contaminants. These can all mix with lubricants and reduce their effectiveness, causing increased wear, corrosion, and premature component failure.
High Load and Shock Loads
Crushing, milling, and extraction equipment undergoes significant loads and frequent shock loads, especially in the crushing mills and gearboxes. These high-pressure conditions can cause lubricants to break down and lead to metal-to-metal contact.
Corrosion and Chemical Exposure
Sugarcane juice is a highly acidic solution. Prolonged exposure to it can cause damaging corrosion in machinery, particularly in crushers and mills. This corrosion weakens parts, contaminates the lubricant and affects its performance.
High Temperatures
Some equipment, like steam turbines, boilers and bearings operate at high temperatures. This can cause lubricants to degrade, lose viscosity, and form deposits, leading to component wear and overheating.
Dust and Bagasse Contamination
Sugar milling produces very large amounts of dust and bagasse These can enter lubrication systems and create abrasive conditions causing accelerated wear of components.
Typical Sugar Cane Applications
Crushing Mills, Rollers, Gearboxes, Drive Systems, Bearings (Conveyor and Roller Bearings), Steam Turbines, Boilers and Centrifugal Separators.
